U.S.D. #261 offers a continuum of services to students with autism spectrum disorders. Many identified students are served through an inclusion or resource setting in their neighborhood schools. Students who are not successful in one of these settings may be referred to the communication disorders classroom which is located at Rex Elementary School. This class serves students grades Kindergarten through 5th grade.
The focus of this program is to develop communication skills, social skills, and academic skills. Students receive communication support through visual supports, visual schedules, and routines. Social skills are enhanced and rehearsed through structured activities within the building and through weekly community outings. Appropriate behavior is also addressed during social skills using positive behavior support, social stories, and the use of a safe place. Academic skills are supported through the use of work bins, technology, and multi-sensory approaches.
