WHY A HEALTH & WELLNESS POLICY? View the Policy

The National Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in three children born in 2000 ultimately will develop diabetes because of eating too much and not exercising enough. During the past two decades, the percentage of American children who are overweight has more than doubled for children aged 6-11 and tripled for adolescents aged 12-19. Approximately one-fifth of the calories consumed by children and adolescents in a day comes from added sugars such as those found in soft drinks and candy. Because of these alarming trends, the U.S. Surgeon General released a Call to Action. Part of that action was a public law requiring new guidelines be implemented for school food service. To comply with this law, The Haysville Board of Education adopted a Wellness Policy.

In addition to eating better, students and staff are finding new ways to add physical activity to their day. For example, E.C.C. has added a "Move and Groove" class and Oatville students make at least two laps around the playground before they play at recess to accumulate miles for the Oatville Mileage Club. Stay tuned for future reports of wellness activities.

Thanks parents, for your support as the students and staff of U.S.D. 261 work toward living a healthier lifestyle.
