Parent Connection by Teresa Tosh,
Elementary Curriculum

Practicing at home on the skills children learn in school is vital to their success and it’s fun!
Here’s some ideas to try.

Reading >>

The time for a book is ANYTIME!

Have many reading materials available.

Encourage your child to use the library & its resources.

Notice when your child is enjoying a book. Ask questions such as, “What do you like most about the book?” “Have there been any surprises in your reading?” “Who is your favorite character? Why?”

Put your heads together and make up a new ending to a favorite story. Help your child use his/her imagination to anticipate events.

Let your child see you enjoying reading often and encourage a family reading time when the TV is turned off.

Make time every day to read to your child.

Writing >>

Make a note of it.

Provide a quiet corner where your child can write.

Supply the writer’s tools: paper, pencil, markers, notebooks, & a dictionary.

Reading improves writing skills.

Make time to talk more with your child. When you share your own experiences and feelings, your child gains a stronger control of his/her own use of language for writing.

Let your child see you write. Encourage your child to write for real life purposes:

Make a grocery list
Complete phone messages
Write thank you notes for gifts
Keep a daily journal
Share notes between you and your child in which you share good news, a memory, or directions
