Battle of the Books

This year USD 261 4th and 5th grade students will have an opportunity to be involved in America's Battle of the Books, a reading incentive program. Students will read books, then come together to demonstate their abilities and test their knowledge of the books they have read. The competitions are similar in style to the TV series, "Family Feud", but the structure and format of the competitions may vary depending on the needs, resources, and personal preferences at various school sites. To get more information regarding the program visit http://www.battleofthebooks.org and watch for additional information on this website.

Are You Utilizing Nelson's Resource Room?

Nelson Elementary has a room set aside for parents to access resources to effectively help their children at home. The room features a computer, educational publications, and a work area for parents and volunteers. The computer in the Resource Room allows parents to access the KPIRC website and other educational websites.

"Our Resource Room is in its seventh year and we believe that it has been a great tool for our parents," said Nelson Principal Mike Mitchener. "We believe there is a link between our Resource Room and all of our parent involvement."

Recently, Nelson's Parent Resource Room was recognized in the Kansas Parent Information Resource Center publication "Creating Family, School & Community Partnerships" which featured Successful Parent Involvement Practices in Kansas Schools.
