Description: The research is in and it is OUTSTANDING!!! We have
long known how beneficial learning sign language can be for
special needs children but now an 18-year study reveals the
benefits of teaching normal hearing children to sign. Benefits
include a 10 –12 IQ point boost, reduction of communication
frustration, and stimulation of the language centers of
the brain. It also leads to earlier verbal speech then nonsigning
peers, it builds self-esteem, positively effects the
parent-child bond and is found to be an easy and fun activity.
Attendees will receive a workbook, valuable resource list,
color flashcards for each lesson’s core vocabulary signs and
a sign language packet for the animals at the Sedgwick
County Zoo!!!
Presenter: Jane Schulte, a qualified teacher for the course as she has an Elementary
Teaching Certification and BA in Art Education K-
12 from the University of Colorado. She holds a Masters Degree
in Special Education: Emphasis Hearing Impaired from
the University of Northern Colorado. Jane has experience
teaching regular elementary education, early childhood and
also taught at the Northwest School For Hearing Impaired
Children in Seattle, WA. She is familiar with current teaching
techniques and strategies for teaching ASL to hearing
infants, toddlers and young children. She also has personally
been successful training her own two children to sign from infancy.

Description: Cognitive Coaching is a research-based model which capitalizes upon and enhances teachers' cognitive processes. Cognitive Coaching supports informed teacher decision-making through strategies that not only enhance teachers' intellectual capacities, but increase their capacity to modify themselves. Presenter: Carol Simoneau has worked as a teacher and reading specialist with students of all ages. As a reading specialist, she modeled instructional strategies in the classroom and worked with students in intervention programs designed to prevent reading failure. Carol has received the Kansas State Department of Education Distinguished Educator Award. She has also served on the Board of Directors for the Kansas Staff Development Council. Carol is a national training associate for Cognitive Coaching and also provides professional development in reading, writing, curriculum design, and assessment.

Presenter: Carla Heintz has a Bachelor's of Science in teaching Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten children with a handicapped emphasis from Iowa State University, a Master's degree in Special Education with a gifted emphasis from Wichita State University, and has completed the building level administrative certificate program through Newman University. She is currently the ECC Coordinator for Haysville. Prior to that, Carla was a teacher in the Wichita Public School system for 16 years. She has experience teaching Pre-K, Early Childhood Special Education, Kindergarten, and First Grade.

Description: A new twist on the "tried and true" jigsaw reading. In this updated version, all students read the entire selected reading. Students then complete one of 5 tasks and report back to their main group. These tasks include being a summarizer, a clue creator, a vocabulary hunter, a webmaster, or a PMQer. EAch task is designed to help the students find main ideas and supporting details in what they read and gives a way for the students to report what was discussed in their groups.
Presenter: Shauna Tinich has a BA in Elementary Education and Science from Central College of Iowa and a MS in Geoscience from Mississippi State University. She has taught for eleven years. In that time, she has been a member of several curriculum committees including committees for the Kansas State Department of Education that wrote the Middle Level Science Performance Level Descriptors and the Middle Level Science Vocabulary Glossary Writing Group.

Description: This is a one day training ont he basics of PowerSchool. From searching to bulking in information - the more one knows about PowerSchool, the more beneficial the program becomes for the school district. The class will be hands on, letting you get into your own school to work with live data. You are welcome to attend one or more of these classes. Training is tailored to beginners and novices. Please be ready for hard work as we will be looking at schedules, historical grades, and special programs. We will also explore some of USD 261 special custom fields for SPED and KIDS uploads.
Presenter: Keven McDonald, has spent the last eighteen years in Haysville School Systems. He taught English at Campus High School for nine years, and has been a middle school counselor for the remaining years. For the last four years, he has been a key part of building the Master Schedule at HMS. In the past five years, he has spent hours at the computer to better understand the ins and outs of PowerSchool, PowerTeacher, and PowerGradebook. His goal is to use PoweSchool in every way possible to make everbody's job easier and more productive. As he sees it, why reinvent the wheel each and every year.

Description: The goals for this session is to help educators gain the most from our Renaissance Learning programs. Jennifer will share the latest in evidence-based classroom practices and a new Kansas Department of Education initiative called All Books Connect. She will introduce Read Now Power Up, which is a reading intervention for grades 4-9 that Haysville already owns to support MTSS strategies. A program called Home Connect which improves parental involvement will also be discussed. Jennifer will be open for questions to support implementation of Renaissance Learning programs at Haysville schools.

Presenter: Jennifer Burns is our Renaissance Learning representative located in the Kansas City area. In her role, she meets administrators and teachers to evaluate how Renaissance school improvement programs align to successfully meet teaching and learning objectives for Kansas teachers and students. Jennifer moved from the classroom to corporate positions with Apple and for the last five years with Renaissance Learning. She has supported classroom technology integration for more than 24 years in both K-12 and university environments.

Description: If you have ever seen "The Bag Ladies" in action, you have experienced the most awesom tranformation of a paper bag ever! "The Bag Ladies" convert paper bags and other throw away types of objects into classroom organizers, manipulatives and motivational resources. During the workshop we will be making several of the most popular "Bag Ladies" projects, some of their new projects, and discussing ways to use these items in your classroom. Appropriate for students K-8, these projects will motivate and inspire you and your students to think outside the box. Join us for a day of bags, tape, glue, scissors and lots of creativity! Please bring your scissors, lots of energy and be ready to have some fun. "The Bag Ladies" books and thematic units will be available for individual purchase.

Presenter: Lisa McKeown received her Bachelors of Science in Elementary Education from Newman University. She taught in the elementary classroom for 16 years in grades 2-4. She completed her Masters of Education in Counseling at Wichita State University and has worked as the school counselor at Nelson Elementary in Haysville for the past 7 years. She is presently the school counselor at Prairie Elementary in Haysville. Lisa is the building coach for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. She is committed to supporting staff and parents in promoting student success. She completed the Advance Love and Logic Instructor training in October of 2006.

Description: This activity based workshop will provide participants with strategies for effective use of para-educators in educational settings. Participants will demonstrate an understanding of roles and responsibilities of paras, the components of training paras, and models of the inclusive classroom. In addition, participants will be provided with "Hot Tools" for implementation of accommodations with the regular classroom.
Presenter: Cynthia Lindenmeyer has her MSE from Wichita State University. She is a Program Consultatnt with the Sedgwick County Special Education Cooperative. Her 20 years with the Cooperative have included nine years working with special needs students in Valley Center High School, six years coordinating para-educators and the last five years working as a consultant, professional developer and coordinator of the mentoring program for the Cooperative.
Presenter: Leann Todd has a MA in communicative Disorders and Sciences from the Wichita State University. She has worked for the Sedgwick County Special Education Cooperative for the past 23 years. She was a Speech-Language Pathologist for 20 years in Maize before assuming the role of Assistive Technology Coordinator for the Sedgwick County Cooperative.

Leslianne has been a middle school math teacher in USD 259 for four years. Last summer, Leslianne earned a Certificate of Completion for Kagan Structures for Cooperative Learning from the School Trainer Institute. Her career highlights include the Teacher of Promise Award from Wichita State University, the Distinguished Classroom Teacher Award in USD 259, and the Kansas Horizon Award. Leslianne believes student engagement is the key to learning and classroom management.

Presenter: Melissa Oakley currently serves as an Adjunct Faculty Member for Baker University
in Overland Park and Wichita, Kansas. She focuses on Classroom Management
and Differentiated Instruction. Melissa spent the first 10 years of her
educational career in public education serving as an elementary teacher, K-5
principal, and faculty member for Baker University. Melissa has also conducted
numerous staff development sessions on school Improvement, new teacher induction,
mentoring, alternative assessment, technology integration and cooperative
learning. Melissa is a life-long learner and keeps current on effective instructional
practices and staff development. Her strong knowledge background, experience,
enthusiasm and passion are evident in her training sessions. She
translates a deep understanding of theory and methods into practical, teacherfriendly
strategies and presentations!

Leadership knowledge and skills are imperative at all levels of the district and community. This academy will equip you with the tools you need to be a Teacher Leader or an Administrator in your district. There are two strands of the Leadership Academy to choose from including the Teacher Leader Strand and the Teachers Who Aspire To Become Administrator Strand. Each strand meets seven times throughout the year.
