Description: In 2007 Shawnee Heights adopted a new and exciting approach to engaging student learning. This approach is called Quantum Learning. Quantum Learning is a brain based learning approach that was founded in 1981 by Dr. Lozanov. Dr. Lozanov found that he could accelerate learning by managing the different states of the brain by the use of specific types of music and paying special attention to the overall environment. Since that time Bobbi DePorter took his research along with other neuroscientists' and began finding ways to make it useful in today's classrooms. We have been using the teaching strategies from this Quantum Learning approach in our own classrooms for the past 3 years and we have seen great progress in the retention of information. By keeping students relaxed but alert we have students engaged in the content that we are teaching and by "tagging" the information to prior knowledge, movement or areas in the room, their retention of the information is much higher. Here is the best news…a lot of the teaching strategies (or moves) are not completely brand new to what many of us do in our classrooms now. In many cases we have just made minor adjustments to our lessons and added a few new gadgets here and there.
