Calendar Artwork Contest Winner, Mary Miller

In December, 8th grade Art student Mary Miller and HMS Art teacher Nicole Taylor, traveled to Topeka where Mary was recognized by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment as a finalist. Mary's work appears for September in the official Kansas Don't Spoil It! calendar. This yearly contest is hosted by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and will feature student artwork for each month of the year. The goal of the calendar is to increase awareness of environmental issues such as natural resource conservation, waste management, recycling and general "greening" activities. Congratulations Mary!

Magazine Sales
It's that time of year again! Our annual magazine sales will kick-off with a student assembly, Thursday, February 3. Sales will continue through Wednesday, February 22. HMS students sell magazines to help build the student incentive fund. The money earned through selling the magazines will be used to promote school pride and to honor students who are responsible school citizens. If you are planning to purchase or renew a magazine subscription, please help our students and school by purchasing with us. The company used by the school for this program is called QSP and has a fine reputation. STudents are given many incentives to participate such as, cash awards, unique gift items, electronics, a limo lunch and many more items.
Get Your Pictures In the Yearbook
The Hawk Yearbook Staff invites students and parents to submit photos for the yearbook. If you've got great photos of school and community events or you and your friends just having fun, we'd like to see them. Our photographers can't be everywhere. Help us get as many photos as possible to create an awesome book that everyone will want to have and enjoy. Get directions...

Attendance is Important
Students who attend school regularly are more successful, both academically and socially, than those
with many absences. We ask that you read the following information carefully so that you will be aware
of both district and state attendance requirements.
When a student is absent, his/her parents or guardians are asked to telephone the school (554-
2251) on the day of the absence or on the day immediately following the absence. A parent may
substitute a note for the school on the day that the student returns to school. Any absence not excused
within this 24-hour time frame will be considered unexcused, and the student will not receive
classroom credit for the days absent.
Students who arrive at school anytime after 7:45 a.m. must report to the office to sign in. Students
who are habitually late to school will lose their opportunity to be excused. Students who have three
consecutive unexcused absences or five days of unexcused absences in any semester or seven unexcused
school days in any school year, whichever occurs first, will be considered not attending
school as per Kansas Law 72-11139c. Students who are less than 13 years of age will be reported
to Social and Rehabilitation Services. Students who are more than 13 years old but less than 16
will be reported to the appropriate county or district attorney.
Students are not allowed to leave school with anyone other than the parent/guardian, unless the parent/
guardian has given such permission and the school has been contacted about such. Parents/guardians
are required to come into the office to sign the student out of school. |
