One of our main goals for 2007-2008 school year is to enhance our school climate. We want all students to feel safe, appreciated and enjoy coming to school. GO DO IT! activities are just one way to make school a more positive school climate. These activites allow teachers and students another opportunity to "connect" on a more personal level. Approximately once a month, we are designating a specific tme to foster personal relationships. We have an incredibly talented staff at HMS and these activities provide an outlet for them to share their talents, interests, and hobbies with our students. The first Go Do It! was August 31 and we had over 60 activities for the students at HMS to choose from, The students enjoyed activities such as finger painting, jewelry making, roller blading, volleyball, card games, guitar playing, and karoake. There was something for everyone!

Along with more opportunities to have fun at school, also comes more academic responsibilty. SURG (Sorry Ur Grounded) is a new program implemented this year to provide additional support for any student who is failing any class by assigning them to a SURG room during Guided Study.

The HMS National Junior Honor Society is collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. They would welcome pop tab donations from all parents and students.  Pop tabs can be deposited in containers located at HMS in the office, teachers' lounges and cafeteria.  Please contact Mrs. Beck at HMS for more information.

Community

Haysville is a community located in south central Kansas, two miles south of Wichita. Its population is 8,364 people; however, Haysville Unified School District 261 serves a much larger population. Within a three-mile radius of the center of the city, there are approximately 19,000 inhabitants in this urban/rural setting. Haysville Middle School lies in the center of the city and is fed by four public schools Freeman, Rex, Nelson, Oatville and Ruth Clark. Students graduating from Haysville Middle School attend Campus High School, located just south of the Wichita city limits.

The community of Haysville is growing. Future projections place the population of the city alone at 19,700 by the year 2010. This does not include the tremendous growth in the outlying areas of the district, particularly in the Oatville area. As a result of this growth, U.S.D. #261 reopened Freeman School in 1986 as a fifth/sixth grade attendance center. Further growth resulted in a restructuring of the district. In 1991, an addition of twenty-one classrooms and a multipurpose room was added to Haysville Junior High to accommodate all sixth graders in the community. Freeman and all other elementary schools then became K-5 attendance centers. At that time Haysville Junior High officially became Haysville Middle School.

School

Haysville Middle School is a sixth, seventh, and eighth grade attendance center with an enrollment of 1141 students.  The school colors are red and white and the mascot is the Hawk.  HMS is a member of the Walnut Valley School League for activities.

The school day at HMS begins at 7:40 a.m. and ends at 2:45 p.m. The students attend eight classes a day.  Seven of the classes are 45 minutes in length.  The eighth class is 83 minutes in length and is used for lunch, Channel 1, Sustained Silent Reading, and study time.  Sixth grade students are enrolled in the following classes:  Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Reading, a rotation of Health/Physical Education/Life Skills, and a choice between Band, Orchestra, or a rotation of exploratory classes which include General Music / Art / Keyboarding.  Seventh grade students are enrolled in Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Mathematics, a rotation of Health/Spanish/Computer, and a minimum of 12-weeks of Reading.  Elective courses include Band, Orchestra, Vocal Music, Art, Keyboarding, Physical Education, and General Music.  Eighth grade students are enrolled in the following classes:  Math, Science, Social Studies, English, a rotation of Careers/Kansas History/Elective Choice, Reading if the student's reading level is below grade level, and electives which include FACS, Art, Spanish, Physical Training, Band, Orchestra, Physical Education, and Vocal Music.  Select students may also become Office and Media Center aides.

  HOME OF THE HAWKS

Special academic programs offered at HMS during and after school include Autism, Emotional Disturbance, Mental Retardation, Multiple Disabilities, Orthopedic Impairment, Specific Learning Disabilities, Speech and Language Impairment, Gifted-Talented-and Creative, Study Bus, High Q, Spelling Bee, and Math Counts.

Students who have fallen behind grade level are allowed to take advantage of the I.D.E.A. (Individual Development in Every Area) room.  Students assigned to this room remain in the area for the entire day working on math, science, social studies, and English.  Individual plans are made for students in an effort to catch them up with their peers.  One full-time certified staff member as well as two full-time paraprofessionals assist students in this class.  Traditional textbook assignments as well as computer-assisted curriculum are used to give students academic support.  As soon as a student completes their individual plan, they are promoted back into their age appropriate grade level.

Competitive athletics are available to all seventh and eighth grade boys and girls.  Boys may participate in football, basketball, wrestling, cross country, tennis and track.  Girls' sports include volleyball, basketball, track, cross country, tennis and cheerleading.

Staff (click here for the staff directory)

The programs at HMS are provided by a full and part-time certified staff of 78.  Fifty-seven are women and twenty-one are men.  This includes one principal, three assistant principals one of whom serves as the athletic director, three counselors, a school psychologist, a community resource liaison, and a school resource officer.  Thirty-two percent of the staff have a master's degree or beyond.  Thirty-eight of the staff members in the middle school have taught in U.S.D. #261 for five or fewer years.  Nineteen staff members have five or fewer years of total teaching experience.  Thirteen of the seventy-eight staff members have more than twenty-six years of total teaching experience.  Forty-two classified staff supports the certified staff at Haysville Middle School, which includes paraprofessionals, library aids, and secretaries.

Parent Group

Haysville Middle School encourages parent involvement. There is an active parent group that normally meets at 5:30 P.M. on the first Monday of every month.  Meetings are used to plan activities for students and to determine ways to support various school programs.  All parents are encouraged to attend these meetings because many decisions are made that impact students in the Middle School.
