Oatville Elementary School Recognized as a Capturing Kids’ Hearts National Showcase Schools Award Winner!

Capturing Kids' HeartsOur school was named a Capturing Kids Hearts showcase school. Such a great honor for us and proof that we have the best staff, students and parents. Staff works daily on building meaningful relationships with the students, providing a safe environment and making earning FUN! Parents, much of the success we see is because of your involvement and dedication to your child's learning. Thank you to all staff, students and parents for making this school such a wonderful place to be!

Now you can check your child's progress in Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math from home. Renaissance Learning has released a Home Connect program. Follow this link and use the same log in information your child uses at school.

Kansas regulations now require that we provide all parents with notice of policies regarding Emergency Safety Interventions ("ESI''). The State of Kansas policy is available on our website and in our student handbooks. In addition, we will provide a copy of the policy at any time upon request.

Latchkey before school is provided through the Haysville Activity Center (HAC). For information to sign up your child for morning latchkey or for drop in care for your kids on days in which school is out.

Call the school if you are interested in becoming a teacher helper, tutor, field trip monitor, etc. The students need YOU!

Literacy First

November Update

What do retelling, summarizing, main idea, predicting, clarifying and questioning all have in common? These are essential comprehension skills that every child needs in order to understand the text that they read.
Teachers use a variety of tools to help your child comprehend while reading. Graphic organizers, modeling ‘think-alouds’ or making “I Wonder…” statements, activating prior knowledge to help your child to make connections to the text, and asking higher-level thinking questions are just a few.
Some ways you can help your child comprehend the stories or passages they are reading are to start with that emotional hook. Ask your child why they chose the library book they brought home. What do they know about the topic? Discuss the meaning of vocabulary used in the story. Model a ‘thinkaloud’ such as “I’m wondering why there is an empty lake on the front cover…” Have them predict what will happen before they start the next chapter. Showing an interest and engaging in your child’s reading will help cement those comprehension skills and instill a love for literacy.

Each month I will post information regarding literacy strategies or skills that might be helpful for you and your child at home. If you have any questions about Literacy First or other academic areas, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher, call me at 554-2290, email, or check out the official website:
