New Dismissal Time - 3:55 PM

Kansas Statute, 72-1106 establishes School Year Requirements for all Kansas Schools. Each school within our district is required to be open a minimum of 1,116 hours. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen school closings our elementary schools will be short of the minimum requirement. Extending our school day by 5 minutes for the Elementary Schools for the remainder of the 2017-18 school year will make-up the needed time. All afternoon bus routes and times will be adjusted to accommodate the additional time.

Skate Party

The PTA is planning a skating party at Roller City from 4:15 to 6:00 p.m. The cost of skating is $4.00 per person with the students being transported to the skating rink by district school bus. Please be sure to come into the rink between 6:00 and 6:15 p.m. to check your child out. Permission slips will be sent home prior to the event and students will not be allowed to enter the bus without a signed slip. Please note the skating money and spending money must be in separate envelopes.

Now you can check your child's progress in Accelerated Reader and Accelerated Math from home. Renaissance Learning has released a Home Connect program. Follow this link and use the same log in information your child uses at school.

Kansas regulations now require that we provide all parents with notice of policies regarding Emergency Safety Interventions ("ESI''). The State of Kansas policy is available on our website and in our student handbooks. In addition, we will provide a copy of the policy at any time upon request.

Latchkey before school is provided through the Haysville Activity Center (HAC). For information to sign up your child for morning latchkey or for drop in care for your kids on days in which school is out.

Call the school if you are interested in becoming a teacher helper, tutor, field trip monitor, etc. The students need YOU!

Literacy First

March Update

Spring is just around the corner and that means students will be out for spring break soon. The last thing any of the kids want to think about is doing homework, but it is so important that kids keep reading during their time off. Kids need to be exposed to and learn between 3,000-4,000 words a year to help them understand grade level material. Teachers do a great job incorporating vocabulary in their daily lessons in all subject areas. They consistently have those vocabulary-rich conversations in the classroom to help expose your child to a variety of words.

So what can you do at home to help your child keep up? There are plenty of ways to make reading fun:

  • Go to the city library and check out a variety of things to read; kids magazines, nonfiction and fiction books, newspapers from years past, journals about an interesting topic.
  • Have kids read joke books, the cereal box, poems, a grocery list, a play and song lyrics.
  • Read while wearing silly glasses or using funny voices (robot, queen/king, mouse, giant).
  • If your child is not reading yet, practice saying the letters sounds of the alphabet.
  • Put basic sight words on notecards and post them around the house. Label everything.
  • Read to them and be their biggest supporter. Encourage them. Praise them. The key here is to find things that interest your child and have fun while reading.
