USD 261 is in the process of updating all student records to meet federal requirements. Every student will need to complete the Race/Ethnicity Form, in order to update student demographics. This federally mandated information must be collected before September,2009. Please assist us in collecting this data by promptly returning your child's form to their school office. If you have further questions, call the school office.
Why does the school need this information?
Each year, every school district in Kansas is required to report student data by race and ethniity categories set by the federal government to the Kansas State Department of Education (KSDE). Though the KSDE does not report individual student data to the federal government, the total number of studetns in various categories of each school is reported. These reports help keep track of changes in student enrollments and ensure that all students receive the educational programs and services to which they are entitled.
Why do I have to report my race again?
Recently the federal government adjusted the student data reporting categories. With the new reporting categories, you will need to update your child's data. Starting with the 2009-2010 school year, all schools in Kansas will report student data to KSDE using the new categories.
What if I choose not to provide the school with this information?
The Federal Government requires that all students be identified. If you do not provide the information, trained observers will declare your child's race to the best of their ability.
Where can I learn more?
